Frédéric Moreau on the Evolving Landscape of Boat Ownership and Chartering
Frédéric Moreau, a seasoned veteran of the nautical world, shares his insights on the changing dynamics of boat ownership and the growing popularity of chartering. From his early days sailing on lakes near Tours to his current role at Dream Yacht Charter, Moreau has witnessed firsthand the evolution of the industry.
From Optimist to Dream Yacht Charter: A Nautical Journey
Moreau’s journey began at the age of six, sailing Optimists on a lake near Tours. He progressed through various classes, including Mini, 420, and Laser, benefiting from a strong foundation at a pioneering sports school. His passion led him to compete in numerous national and international regattas, participate in ten Tours de France à la Voile, and even sail on prestigious boats like But.
After completing his studies at the INB in Concarneau, Moreau transitioned into the commercial side of the nautical world, selling boats for Bénéteau. He later joined Moorings, where he developed a novel concept in Europe: rental management. After 12 years, he sought a return to sales, eventually finding his niche at Dream Yacht Charter.
The Allure of Rental Management
Moreau emphasizes that Dream Yacht Charter offers more than just boats; it provides the opportunity to sail extensively in diverse destinations at an optimal cost.
“We don’t just sell boats, but above all the possibility of sailing as much as possible, in as many destinations as possible, and at the best cost.”
Rental management allows investors to own a boat without the typical burdens. Under guaranteed income contracts, Dream Yacht Charter handles fixed costs like dock fees, insurance, maintenance, and unforeseen expenses, while guaranteeing the owner a contractual income.
Owners can also opt for a “real” system, receiving 70% of the boat’s generated revenue. While they retain responsibility for fixed costs, they gain greater flexibility in options. Moreau’s role involves guiding owners, helping them make informed decisions that maximize the boat’s rental potential.
Benefits Beyond Ownership
The primary advantage of rental management is making boat ownership more accessible and affordable, without the usual hassles. The income generated, coupled with the exemption from operating costs, significantly reduces the overall investment.
Another key benefit is the freedom to explore the world’s most stunning destinations, from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean, Indian Ocean, Southeast Asia, and South Pacific. This allows owners to experience different sailing environments and embark on memorable voyages with family and friends.
The Rise of Usage Over Ownership
Moreau notes a fundamental shift in consumer behavior, with usage gradually superseding traditional ownership. The surge in demand for cabin cruises exemplifies this trend. Crewed yacht charters now account for 60% of Dream Yacht Charter’s business, up from 40% before the pandemic.
This evolution reflects a desire for enjoyment and convenience, with clients prioritizing pleasure and service over extensive training. Moreau believes that operators and manufacturers must adapt by offering simpler, less equipped, and more accessible boats.
Dream Yacht Charter: A Global Presence
Dream Yacht Charter boasts a fleet of over 800 boats across 29 bases worldwide. Boats remain in management for an average of 66 months, or five and a half years. The company employs 450 people globally.
