ABB to Acquire Netcontrol, Enhancing Grid Automation Capabilities

ABB has announced its intent to acquire Netcontrol, a provider of grid automation solutions for power utilities and critical infrastructure operators. The acquisition is poised to bolster ABB’s offerings in grid automation, addressing the increasing need for digitalization in the energy sector.

  • The acquisition strengthens ABB’s grid automation solutions for energy companies facing increased pressure to digitalize the power grid.
  • Netcontrol’s portfolio includes advanced solutions for managing power grids.
  • The combination of Netcontrol’s expertise with ABB’s portfolio and global reach creates growth opportunities in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions. Financial details of the deal have not been disclosed.

Driving Grid Modernization

As electrification accelerates and the energy transition progresses, power grids face mounting pressure from increased demand, renewable energy sources, and extreme weather events. Grids must become smarter and more digitalized, with electricity projected to account for 50 percent of global energy consumption by 2050, according to the IEA.

ABB’s electrification portfolio, combined with Netcontrol’s advanced grid automation solutions, will support customers in their grid digitalization journey. Netcontrol, headquartered in Helsinki, Finland, employs approximately 100 people. Founded in 1991, it is currently owned by Procuritas Partners, a Swedish private equity fund.

“The grid is becoming the bottleneck in the energy transition. Grid expansion and upgrades are essential to maintaining resilience in energy systems and ensuring the world has enough electricity to support growing populations and industries,” says Adrian Guggisberg, Division President of ABB’s Distribution Solutions.

He further adds, “Connecting everything reliably is becoming increasingly challenging as we add renewable energy sources and new consumers, such as electric vehicles and heat pumps. Energy companies need digitalization and automation to keep the grid stable, resilient, and flexible. The acquisition of Netcontrol fits well into our expanded grid automation portfolio and is an important step forward in helping our customers remain competitive.”

Strategic Integration

Upon completion of the acquisition, Netcontrol’s products and services are expected to be integrated into ABB’s Distribution Solutions portfolio and offered through ABB’s global sales channels.

Sami Kurunsaari, CEO of Netcontrol, commented, “Becoming part of ABB is an exciting next step in our company’s journey. Our customers rely on us for secure, reliable grid automation solutions and close technical collaboration. By joining ABB, we gain the global scale, portfolio, and reach to extend our technology and expertise to many more energy companies and industrial customers while continuing to invest in the products and services our existing customers already know and trust.”
