Artificial Intelligence and the Chainsaw
French Magazine ‘Le Point’ to Replace Human Proofreaders with AI
Bad news abounds! The management of the weekly magazine Le Point, part of the Artémis financial group owned by François Pinault, intends to eliminate its proofreading department. In a cost-saving measure at the expense of human jobs, proofreaders face the dreaded initials: AI, artificial intelligence.
According to reports, “This introduction of AI will be implemented through new publishing tools for the website: the MerciApp spellchecker and Arc Publishing – sold by the American newspaper the Washington Post – which will be introduced from September until mid-November.” As stated by a collective of Le Point employees in a published statement, “IAcracy is on the march.”
The Syndicat des correcteurs CGT (CGT Proofreaders’ Union) has released a statement denouncing a “social plan with a chainsaw,” a common tool in so-called social plans.
Our profession has seen requests for volunteer proofreaders from the union; truly, there are many malevolent glances directed at this noble profession.
