From Mark Zuckerberg to Elon Musk, the “boys club” of Palo Alto
Zuckerberg’s Interview with Joe Rogan: A Shift in Tone?
On January 10th, the atmosphere in Joe Rogan’s studio was relaxed and distinctly testosterone-fueled, resembling a bar in the American heartland with its flashy neon lights and wooden paneling. The comedian, martial arts champion, and number one podcaster in the United States had landed a major interview: a three-hour, face-to-face conversation with Mark Zuckerberg. Zuckerberg, who rarely grants interviews to the press, made a special exception to discuss bow hunting, the excesses of the American left, and the progress of artificial intelligence (AI) with Rogan, a vocal supporter of Donald Trump.
With his gentle smile, the “nice Zuck” also slipped in a statement that contrasted sharply with his usually polished discourse. He, who had made people forget, through his progressive statements, that his first attempt before creating Facebook was an application to compare the physical appearance of Harvard girls, wants to say this: “Masculine energy is good. Society is full of it, but corporate culture is trying to turn away from it. All these forms of energy are positive, but a culture that gives a little more prominence to aggressiveness has its merits.”
It’s hard to believe that Meta, which has only 36% women among its employees and only four women on its 15-member board of directors, is lacking in masculinity. But such are the times: Zuckerberg’s new Trumpist friends are convinced that “society has become neutral, emasculated,” as he told Rogan. He wants to prove to them that in this curious war of the sexes, he is on their side.
