AI Talent Wars: Meta and Google Spend Big to Attract Top Engineers
The numbers circulating in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector are sometimes staggering. Google reportedly paid $2.4 billion to acquire a few key executives from the startup Windsurf and utilize its technology. Meta is said to have offered a compensation package worth $200 million over several years to poach Ruoming Pang, the engineer who oversaw research on large AI models at Apple, according to Bloomberg.
These figures are comparable to those of LeBron James, noted one agency journalist, referring to the famous American basketball player’s annual salary of $52 million, according to ESPN. AI specialists are now being transferred like athletes during the transfer window, a tech podcast, “TBPN,” humorously pointed out on X.
Meta’s founder, Mark Zuckerberg, also made headlines when he mentioned a massive data center project on Monday, July 14th. This project is envisioned to have a power capacity equivalent to five nuclear reactors (5 gigawatts) and a size comparable to the island of Manhattan in New York.
