Monaco Explorations: 5-Year Mediterranean Mission with the MODX 70

A Groundbreaking Zero-Emission Vessel Embarks on a Mediterranean Mission

A pioneering vessel, the MODX 70, is setting sail as a showcase for zero-emission boating. This eco-consciously designed vessel combines wind propulsion using Aeroforce wings, electric propulsion, hydrogeneration, and solar energy via 70 m2 of photovoltaic panels, enabling sustainable and limitless navigation. This combination of innovations allows the MODX 70 to offer a zero-CO2 emission navigation experience.

“This vessel is more than just another boat. It’s a response to current challenges: how can we explore, cooperate, and raise awareness while minimizing our carbon footprint? The MODX 70 demonstrates that alternative navigation methods are possible in the Mediterranean,” says Robert Calcagno, President-CEO of the Explorations de Monaco.

The Urgent Need for Research in the Mediterranean

Unlike the oceans and polar regions, the Mediterranean Sea has very few dedicated scientific vessels. Yet, this sea is home to over 17,000 marine species, 19% of which are endemic, and it is warming 20% faster than the global average. With multiple pressures such as pollution, overexploitation, and tourism, the need to acquire data and experiment with local solutions is more urgent than ever.

A Mission Focused on Youth and Local Communities

The MODX 70 is not just a laboratory; it’s also an ambassador vessel that will host educational workshops, school visits, meetings with local communities, and traveling exhibitions. This is a way to transmit scientific knowledge and a passion for the ocean to a wider audience.

“Each stop of the MODX 70 will be a space for dialogue and transmission. We want young people, decision-makers, and residents of coastal areas to become active participants in a sustainable Mediterranean,” emphasizes Xavier Prache, Director of Explorations de Monaco and Mission Leader.

A Five-Year Mediterranean Odyssey

From Greece to the entire basin, the Mediterranean Missions aim to contribute to the international 30×30 target – protecting 30% of the oceans by 2030 – by putting science at the service of action and regional cooperation. The departure marks the beginning of a five-year journey, symbolizing the commitment of Monaco and its partners to a better protected and better understood common sea.
