Updating Your Boat’s Engine Information: A Guide

The maritime administration is requesting boat owners to verify or update their engine information. You should have received a letter from the Directorate General for Maritime Affairs inviting you to do so. This process must be completed online by midnight on September 30, 2025.

If you encounter difficulties with the online process, you can send an email to gufip-info@mer.gouv.fr or a letter with your contact information to GUFIP 27 quai Solidor 35400 Saint-Malo. GUFIP stands for “Guichet Unique de la Fiscalité de la Plaisance” (One-Stop Shop for Recreational Boating Taxation).

How to Update Your Information Online

  • Go to www.demarches-plaisance.gouv.fr
  • Click on the “déclarer les CV ou kW” (declare HP or kW) button.
  • Enter the code provided in the letter you received.

From there, you can view the engine information the administration has on file for your boat and modify it if necessary.

Why This Campaign?

The recreational vessel registry has been in place for many years, and the data it contains is not always up-to-date. Several scenarios are possible:

  • If the engine data is correct, simply validate it.
  • If the data is incorrect, there are two possibilities:
    • If the error only concerns the actual power, simply enter the correct value.
    • If the error concerns other data (make, serial number, etc.), contact your local DDTM/DML (departmental directorate of territories and the sea) to update the file.
  • If the data is missing, you must also contact the DDTM/DML.

Understanding the Tax

The TAEMUP (Annual Tax on Personal Watercraft) combines the former DAFN (Annual Francization and Navigation Fee) and the former DAP (passport fee). Currently, part of this tax is calculated based on the engine power in kW for PWCs (Personal Watercraft) such as jet skis, or in fiscal horsepower for boats. This tax has been in place since 1967 and has not undergone any major reforms since 2013. Its rates and taxation criteria have not changed.

Importance of Completing the Process

If you do not respond, the administration may reconstruct the engine power based on available data, such as horsepower.

Where to Find the Necessary Information

You can find the required information on your francization certificate or navigation title. This includes:

  • Engine type (inboard or outboard)
  • Make
  • Model
  • Serial number
  • Power in kW and HP
  • Fuel type

This information is also usually found on the engine itself (nameplate). The information held by the administration may differ, for example, if the boat has been re-powered. In this case, you must notify the administration.

The Administration’s Objectives

This initiative allows the administration to gain a better understanding of the engine power used in recreational boating, fuel types, etc. The ministry responsible for recreational boating is also responsible for ecological transition, biodiversity, forestry, the sea, and fisheries. Some may see this as an opportunity to readjust the tax. The near future will reveal the answer.
