Wioniq Launches AI-Powered Solution to Combat Hidden Water Leaks in Municipalities
European tech company Wioniq has launched WATER+, an AI-based monitoring solution developed by Pluvion, designed to help municipalities detect hidden leaks and reduce unnecessary purification costs. This innovative solution addresses the pervasive issue of excessive water infiltrating sewage systems, leading to increased purification expenses, higher energy consumption, and strain on infrastructure.
The Challenge of Inflow and Infiltration (I&I)
Many municipalities grapple with significant volumes of extraneous water entering their wastewater systems. This inflow and infiltration (I&I) silently drives up purification costs, increases energy consumption, and burdens infrastructure. The WATER+ solution offers a smart, data-driven approach to locate, quantify, and address these inflows.
“Almost all municipalities struggle with inflow and infiltration. At the same time, it is difficult to know exactly where the leak occurs. The AI solution WATER+ makes it easier to analyze the network in real time – which lowers costs, saves resources and strengthens the local infrastructure,” says Phillip Grimm, co-founder and CEO of Pluvion GmbH.
From Data to Actionable Insights
WATER+ combines sensor data with AI analysis via Wioniq IQ WATER+. The system generates automated monthly reports highlighting the most affected zones, data quality, and reliability, complemented by clear heatmaps. Its integration capabilities allow municipalities to connect the platform directly to their GIS or web systems. The battery-powered, contactless sensors ensure low maintenance and minimal installation effort.
Karl-Johan Wirfalk, Managing Director at Wioniq, emphasizes the solution’s ease of use: “Wioniq IQ WATER+ is delivered as a plug-and-play solution, making it easy for municipalities to get started quickly, with minimal operational work and high scalability.”
Pilot Project Success
Prior to the launch, a pilot project was conducted with a water and wastewater authority in Austria. This project combined WATER+’s intelligent sensors with advanced machine learning for continuous monitoring of the municipality’s sewage network. By analyzing data in real time, the system generated digital heatmaps that clearly identified problem areas. Subsequent inspections revealed unauthorized connections and infiltration points – issues that would have been very difficult to detect manually.
European Expansion Plans
Following the successful pilot project, Wioniq plans to roll out WATER+ on a larger scale across Europe. Future versions will include advanced leak quantification and integration of more infrastructure data streams.
“We are proud of our partnership with Pluvion and plan to launch WATER+ in municipalities across Europe. By strengthening and securing local networks with improved preventive maintenance, the monitoring solution can contribute to a more reliable sewage system and lower maintenance costs,” says Karl-Johan Wirfalk.
