Nova Carbon and Grand Large Yachting: Recycled carbon fibers in shipbuilding

Grand Large Yachting Partners with Nova Carbon to Pioneer Sustainable Boat Building

Grand Large Yachting, a major player in naval construction since 2003, is embarking on a significant partnership with Nova Carbon to integrate recycled carbon fiber into its boat building processes. This collaboration underscores a shared commitment to environmental responsibility and high-performance standards within the nautical industry.

Grand Large Yachting, known for its dedication to enabling sailing adventures while respecting the oceans, recognizes the environmental impact of traditional materials. The company, which encompasses six iconic brands – GUNBOAT, OUTREMER, ORC, GARCIA, ALLURE, and RM – aims to progressively replace virgin carbon fiber with recycled carbon fiber using Nova Carbon’s innovative technology.

Nova Carbon specializes in developing and producing Nova Carbon®, a high-performance recycled carbon fiber derived from the reuse and realignment of fibers collected from industrial sources. This material maintains the technical capabilities of virgin fiber while significantly reducing its environmental footprint, offering a sustainable and competitive alternative for the nautical industry.

A Collaborative Approach to Sustainability

The partnership between Grand Large Yachting and Nova Carbon is built on several key commitments:

  • Circular Collection and Valorization: Grand Large Yachting will provide its carbon fiber waste to Nova Carbon, adhering to the start-up’s guidelines to ensure recyclability and quality.
  • Reintegration of Recycled Fibers: Grand Large Yachting intends to explore and develop solutions to reintegrate recycled fibers from its own waste back into its manufacturing processes.

This initiative has the potential to extend to Grand Large Yachting’s subcontractors, amplifying its positive impact across the entire supply chain. The ultimate goal is to increase the proportion of high-performance recycled carbon fibers in the group’s projects.

Shared Values Drive Innovation

This partnership reflects a convergence of strong values between Nova Carbon and Grand Large Yachting. Both companies are dedicated to preserving the environment by reducing waste and prioritizing the use of recycled materials. They also share a commitment to technical excellence, ensuring that mechanical performance remains uncompromised in naval construction.

The approach is grounded in a continuous pursuit of quality and traceability, achieved through rigorous processes and certified materials. This collaboration paves the way for competitive innovation, leading to a new generation of more sustainable and distinctive boats that align with market expectations.

“Carbon fiber represents a significant part of our environmental footprint. Thanks to this partnership with Nova Carbon, we are taking a key step in combining excellence, sustainability, and innovation in the construction of our sailboats,” says Xavier Desmarest, co-founder of Grand Large Yachting.

“With Nova Carbon, we want to demonstrate that recycled materials can meet the highest technical requirements while significantly reducing environmental impact. This partnership with Grand Large Yachting perfectly embodies this ambition,” adds Hugo Cartron, CEO and co-founder of Nova Carbon.

Looking Ahead

The collaboration between Grand Large Yachting and Nova Carbon represents a significant step towards a more sustainable future for the nautical industry. By embracing recycled materials and prioritizing environmental responsibility, these companies are setting a new standard for boat building and demonstrating that performance and sustainability can go hand in hand.
