Red-hot market: “Capital is flowing from the US”

MilDef – A Swedish NATO Player with a Global Perspective

The Swedish tech company MilDef has long supplied rugged IT solutions to defense customers worldwide. With Sweden’s entry into NATO, the demand for the company’s expertise and products has increased significantly.

“We have gone from being an external supplier to acting from within the alliance. This implies a completely new type of request,” says Magnus Hagman, VP MilDef Nordics.

MilDef offers rugged hardware and software solutions for military and civilian needs, both as individual components and as complete systems, tailored to withstand demanding environments. Customers are located all over the world, and with Sweden’s entry into NATO, the opportunities have increased dramatically.

“Today, we see larger requests, both in volume and scope. Previously, it was often about individual components, but now complete solutions are requested where an entire system must achieve a certain capability. This means that we adapt our offer based on what the customer needs, rather than based on individual specifications,” says Magnus Hagman.

MilDef Fills the Gaps

This means that MilDef must also act differently towards its customers.

“We have gone from simply listening to the customer’s requirements to proactively identifying needs in the market. It is clear that the needs in Europe have increased significantly, and with our knowledge, we can fill certain gaps in the supply chain. It’s about understanding the whole picture and contributing the right components and the right capability, at the right time,” he says.

An important product in the international offering is the OneCIS software platform, which was developed together with the Norwegian Armed Forces. It enables communication and collaboration at the unit level.

“OneCIS enables a communication interface that makes it easy to introduce new capabilities and create interoperability between different systems. The product is now used by the Norwegian, Danish, and Swedish Armed Forces,” explains Magnus Hagman.

MilDef Can Play a Key Role

Today, MilDef collaborates closely with major Swedish and European defense groups and is actively involved in defense innovation. The changed geopolitical situation means that clear structures are needed for collaboration between industry and the state to ensure security of supply and faster deliveries. Therefore, it is also important to have a close dialogue with authorities and governments, to gain an understanding of what is happening and to be able to contribute already in the planning phase of upcoming projects and procurements.

“Europe is facing a major rearmament. It’s not just about delivering new things, but also about modernizing existing systems. Here, we can contribute IT components that quickly increase the capability of existing systems, vehicles, and platforms,” he says.

MilDef is now well-positioned to play a key role in the military rearmament that is now underway.

“It is a question of being relevant and understanding the customer’s needs – and MilDef does that, not only today, but also tomorrow,” concludes Magnus Hagman.
