Young Entrepreneurs Revolutionize Eye Care in Northern Sweden

Two young men in their early twenties are shaking up the optics industry. Starting in Kiruna, they have successfully reduced optician waiting lists in Norrbotten through new technology, flexible solutions, and a patient-focused approach. These young entrepreneurs are now looking to expand their reach and are seen as a beacon of hope within the industry.

Daniel Niemi and Christian Ekhorn, friends who recognized a significant need to assist people with vision problems, launched the initiative. The shortage of opticians caused many elderly residents of Norrbotten to face long waits for eye examinations. Daniel’s prior experience from his father’s optician shop, combined with a strong desire to make a difference, fueled their venture.

“We are what you might call entrepreneurial spirits. Daniel had knowledge of the industry, and I saw the opportunity to develop a business idea while helping the people of Kiruna,” says Christian Ekhorn.

From their base in Kiruna, they have expanded to several other locations. They have also invested in new equipment, enabling them to perform advanced remote examinations, resulting in shorter waiting times and improved eye health for many who struggle to access care.

“By focusing on new technology, utilizing mobile equipment, and employing remote opticians, our operations are incredibly efficient. For example, we can assist patients in an entire senior living facility, eliminating unnecessary and burdensome transportation,” explains Christian Ekhorn.

Following Kiruna, Niemis optik has expanded to Nordmaling, which previously lacked an optician’s shop, and to Ånäset.

“The shortage of opticians demands innovative solutions. We observed that examinations were being conducted in the same traditional manner, despite the increasing prevalence of vision problems. With new technology, we can help many more people achieve good eye health,” says Christian Ekhorn.

Christian and Daniel are members of Synologen, the industry association for independent opticians in Sweden. Synologen views the duo’s innovative approach positively.

“They demonstrate how optician entrepreneurs can combine entrepreneurship with a commitment to their community and its residents. They offer great hope for the future of the industry,” says Eva Larsson, CEO of Synologen.
