A used Toyota - named the smartest car purchase of the year 2025

Toyota’s Used Car Program Wins “Smartest Car Purchase of the Year”

For the first time, Riksförbundet M Sverige (M Sweden), a Swedish motorists’ association, has awarded its “Smartest Car Purchase of the Year” prize to a used car. A used Toyota with Toyota’s Approved Used warranty has been named the winner for 2025.

“It’s naturally very gratifying and a good indication that we’re doing things right,” says Fredrik Kull, Product Manager for Toyota Approved Used at Toyota Sweden AB.

Why a Used Toyota?

M Sweden emphasized Toyota’s reputation for reliability and low running costs. Their press release stated that Toyota models “get the job done without the ownership becoming unnecessarily expensive or fraught with unpleasant surprises.” The availability of a comprehensive warranty on nearly-new cars makes the choice even easier for consumers.

Heléne Lilja, CEO of M Sweden, noted the rising cost of new cars, stating, “Not all households can afford to spend more than necessary on a car purchase. A nearly new Toyota with a long warranty and hybrid technology is a great alternative for many car buyers.”

Toyota’s Strengths Highlighted

The award underscores Toyota’s popularity in Sweden, both among businesses and private customers. This recognition follows Toyota’s recent win as “Sweden’s Most Satisfied Car Owners” in a survey by Vi Bilägare magazine and Loyalty Group’s AutoIndex.

M Sweden’s press release also highlighted the “simplicity” of Toyota models, their suitability for many households, and their acclaimed hybrid technology.

Hybrid Leadership

Toyota’s pioneering work in hybrid technology, starting with the Prius in 1997, has led to over 35 million electrified Toyota and Lexus vehicles sold worldwide. The company’s hybrid philosophy focuses on fuel-efficient mobility with minimal environmental impact, a key part of Toyota’s multi-path strategy toward carbon neutrality.

Toyota believes that hybrid cars offer a cost-effective way to reduce climate impact, especially for those who cannot opt for a fully electric vehicle. The fifth generation of Toyota’s hybrid technology is available across a wide range of models in the Swedish market.

The Toyota Approved Used Advantage

A key factor in the award is the Toyota Approved Used program, which offers a comprehensive warranty with 12-month roadside assistance, as well as attractive private leasing options with fixed monthly costs.

“Toyota has found a niche with simple, straightforward arrangements. A used car warranty that’s worthy of the name, and that provides good security for a long time, is one example. Another is Toyota’s fixed monthly cost for those who lease privately. These are conditions that make it easy for the car buyer to choose,” says Carl-Erik Stjernvall, Technical Expert at M Sweden.

The Award’s Reasoning

“Smartest Car Purchase of the Year”

“A used Toyota with Toyota’s own used car warranty is a combination of an economically sound purchase of a nearly new car with proven good build quality and a really long warranty worthy of the name. Toyota offers good cars in reasonable sizes and popular designs, as well as fuel-saving hybrid technology. In combination with the warranty that lasts up to 20,000 miles, it is a smarter car purchase than buying a brand new car.”

The Approved Used warranty applies to Toyotas at least 24 months old purchased from a Toyota dealer. It remains valid until the car is 10 years old or has traveled 20,000 miles, provided that servicing is carried out at an authorized Toyota workshop.
