ABB RoboCup becomes a global competition: School in Italy has been named world champion in robotics education
ABB RoboCup Crowns First Global Champion
- Student teams from five countries competed in ABB RoboCup’s inaugural global event.
- Over 250 students participated in the live finals in Bergamo, Italy, tackling real-world robotics challenges with ABB technology.
- Italy emerged victorious, marking a milestone in ABB’s commitment to bridging the education gap in robotics and automation.
The ABB RoboCup 2025 concluded on May 21st with a showcase of talent, creativity, and ambition from the next generation of automation leaders. This year marked a significant milestone as international teams were welcomed for the first time, expanding the reach of the RoboCup competition and ABB’s leadership in robotics education.
“Inspiring the next generation of innovators is one of our most important roles as a robotics leader,” said Marc Segura, head of ABB Robotics. “With ABB RoboCup, we provide students with access to real-world tools, technologies, and experiences that enable them to shape the future. Preparing talented students today is a way to solve tomorrow’s challenges.”
The 2025 ABB RoboCup began with over 850 students from 58 Italian schools, along with international teams from France, Spain, India, and China. Through qualifying challenges, participants demonstrated their knowledge and skills in robotics, simulation, and automation.
Following the initial rounds, 250 finalists were selected to participate in the live finals in Bergamo, held at innovation hubs: Confindustria Bergamo – Kilometro Rosso, Fondazione Dalmine, and Seminario Vescovile di Bergamo. Students tackled real-world tasks using ABB robots (GoFa™, IRB 120, and IRB 1200), RobotStudio® simulations, and theory-based questions – tasks that showcased technical competence, teamwork, creativity, and critical thinking.
IIS Alessandro Volta – Pescara, an Italian high school, stood out among the teams, achieving the highest score in the first ABB RoboCup Global Edition, competing against top student teams from around the world. This victory marked a significant win for Italy, claiming the first global title on home soil.
ABB’s RoboCup has grown from a national initiative to a global program, inspiring students through hands-on learning and direct engagement with the industry. Since its launch in 2018, the competition has become a platform for bridging the gap between education and the workplace, providing over 2,800 students with the chance to experience the challenges and opportunities of automation and digital transformation.
The 2025 edition builds on this tradition, scaling up with the first international competition round and setting the stage for broader collaboration in the years to come. Supported by a network of companies, institutions, and innovation centers, RoboCup remains central to ABB’s goal of bridging the education gap in robotics and helping students develop the skills they need to succeed in the new era of automation and artificial intelligence.
