Alfa Laval Launches New Fuel System with Cryogenic Technology for LNG-Powered Vessels

Alfa Laval Expands Alternative Fuel Solutions with New LNG Fuel Treatment Module

Alfa Laval has introduced a new Fuel Conditioning Module (FCM) designed to prepare liquefied natural gas (LNG) for use in marine engines. This launch expands Alfa Laval’s portfolio of alternative fuel solutions, integrating advanced cryogenic technology to provide a complete and reliable fuel supply solution for shipping companies adopting LNG as a fuel source.

The FCM LNG system underscores Alfa Laval’s commitment to offering alternative fuel solutions. As the maritime industry moves towards reducing carbon emissions, LNG has emerged as a crucial transitional fuel. It enables emission reductions today, while the global infrastructure for other alternative fuels, such as methanol and ammonia, is still under development.

Advanced Cryogenic Technology at the Core

The LNG fuel supply system is built on advanced cryogenic technology, recently acquired by Alfa Laval from the French company Fives Energy Cryogenics. This acquisition enables Alfa Laval to offer a high-performance system that allows customers to use LNG efficiently and safely as a marine fuel.

“The transition to new fuels is central to our product development, and over the past five years, we have seen a clear demand from shipping companies for solutions that support this change,” says Martijn Bergink, President of the Marine Division at Alfa Laval. “Our customers are actively preparing for the future, and developments are progressing rapidly. LNG remains the leading alternative fuel in the maritime sector, and thanks to advanced cryogenic technology, we can deliver a highly reliable system that provides tangible value and meets the evolving market needs for LNG utilization.”

A Comprehensive Approach to Alternative Fuels

From proven technologies for methanol and LPG to pioneering developments in ammonia, Alfa Laval is equipped to support shipping companies and shipyards regardless of fuel choice, strengthening its position as a key partner in the journey towards reduced emissions.

Availability

The first test benches for FCM LNG are scheduled for delivery in 2026, with the system becoming available for deliveries in 2027.
