UK’s Top General Calls for National Readiness Amid Rising Russian Threat
In a stark warning echoing sentiments from his French counterpart, the UK’s Chief of the General Staff, General Sir Richard Knighton, has asserted that a greater number of British citizens must be “ready to fight” in the face of escalating threats, particularly from Russia.
Knighton, who succeeded Tony Radakin in September, delivered a sobering assessment at the Royal United Services Institute, a defense-focused think tank. He stated, “The situation is more perilous than anything I have experienced in my career, and the price of peace is rising.”
Beyond Military Strength: A Whole-Nation Approach
While emphasizing that the armed forces remain the UK’s first line of defense and must be prepared to “fight and win,” Knighton stressed that addressing the growing threat requires more than just bolstering military capabilities. He argued for a broader societal commitment, stating that “more people [need to be] ready to fight for their country.”
As Keir Starmer’s Labour government prepares to unveil its industrial defense strategy, Knighton highlighted the critical need for a “significant increase in the number of reservists.” He envisions reservists bringing valuable skills and experience from industries and tech sectors to the armed forces.
Assessing the Risk of Conflict
Acknowledging the uncertainty surrounding the likelihood of open conflict between Russia and a NATO nation, Knighton asserted that “the evidence is clear that the risk… is increasing, and that is the key element for action.” He cited Russia’s “daily” attacks on the UK, including cyberattacks and attempts at “sabotage” and “assassination” carried out by “Russian agents” on British soil.
He further warned, “Russia is also developing new destabilizing weapons systems, such as nuclear-capable torpedoes, or nuclear-powered cruise missiles.” Knighton pointed to the war in Ukraine and Russia’s past actions as evidence of Vladimir Putin’s willingness to target neighboring states, including civilian populations. He added that Moscow has been “clear” about its “intention to challenge, contain, divide and ultimately destroy NATO.”
Building National Resilience Across Sectors
Knighton emphasized that every sector of British life, from universities to the National Health Service (NHS) and industry, has a role to play in “building national resilience.” The UK government has committed to investing 2.5% of its GDP in defense by 2027, followed by 3% after 2029, responding to pressure from the United States for Europe to contribute more to its own defense.
