July: Savers sell off low-risk funds

Swedish Investors Increase Risk Appetite in July

The stock market continued to rise in July, and so did the risk appetite among Swedish fund savers, according to recent statistics from Nordnet.

“Low-risk funds are being sold off as people now feel comfortable increasing the risk in their portfolios,” says Frida Bratt, savings economist at Nordnet.

The Stockholm Stock Exchange in July was characterized by a somewhat fragmented earnings season with occasionally high price movements. But overall, the Stockholm Stock Exchange has continued to tick upwards.

“Perhaps many Swedes chose to buy in, as the Stockholm Stock Exchange has continued to perform well in July despite concerns such as the end of a tariff pause. The agreement between the US and the EU at the end of the month is not a cause for celebration, but it at least removes much of the uncertainty in the market. Now we know the conditions going forward, and that is important for companies and households if the economic wheels are to continue to turn,” says Frida Bratt.

At Nordnet, fund savers have sold off low-risk funds.

“We see several low-risk funds in the form of short-term bond funds at the top of the sales list. This shows that people are positive about the stock market, that they look forward to the future with confidence, and are less in need of the ‘parking space’ that a short-term bond fund often is in more turbulent times,” says Frida Bratt.

Instead, Swedes continue to save in global funds.

“Global funds continue to be a favorite in July. Most savers are hopefully well aware that a global fund contains a very high proportion of the US and that it is a type of fund that performs worse when the krona strengthens against the dollar. But savers now seem more positive about the American stock market, which has reached record levels this summer. The fact that savers are also buying technology funds, containing the big tech giants, reinforces this fact,” says Frida Bratt.
