Trade US Stocks Before the US Market Opens – Here’s How the New Opportunity Works
Published: May 20, 2025, 15:27
A new opportunity to trade US stocks has opened up, as Nordnet, as the first major Swedish player, now makes it possible to trade US stocks before the US market opens.
“It gives our customers completely new opportunities to act on the market in real time,” says Ara Mustafa, investment coach at Nordnet.
The news means that you can buy and sell shares on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq from 13:00 CET, instead of waiting for the regular opening at 15:30.
“Time matters on the stock market,” states Ara Mustafa.
Pre-market trading makes it possible for investors to quickly take a stand and act on new information, such as news, reports, or a tweet.
“This can be crucial for those who want to stay one step ahead of the market,” says Ara Mustafa.

Pre-market trading works in the same way as trading during the US market’s regular opening hours; you trade from the same range of stocks and at the same fees. However, there are differences and risks to be aware of. Since fewer people trade during pre-market trading, the pricing can vary more than during regular opening hours, when more people are active in the market.
“It is important to understand that pre-market trading often has lower liquidity and larger spreads, i.e. larger differences between the buying and selling price. This can make trading more volatile,” says Ara Mustafa.
Get Inspired by Others
For those who want even better control of what is happening in the market – and how other investors are acting – there is a social investment network. There you can follow investors, see their portfolios and discuss current events in real time.
“The social investment network is a unique tool for gaining inspiration and insight into how others act,” says Ara Mustafa.
How Pre-Market Trading in the US Works
- Pre-market trading takes place between 13:00 and 15:30 CET. It is available to all customers, at no extra cost. Orders can be placed at any time, but are only executed during these times.
- Pre-market trading takes place on the NYSE and Nasdaq, just like during regular opening hours (15:30-22:00).
- During pre-market trading, fewer exchanges may be available than during regular trading hours.
- Orders sent to the market during pre-market trading are only valid on the same day. Orders that are not processed during pre-market trading are automatically transferred to regular trading hours.
- Lower trading activity during pre-market trading can lead to a reduced probability of order execution, larger spreads and greater price fluctuations.
