HMS Halland Submarine relaunched after extensive upgrades

On Thursday, February 13th, the submarine HMS Halland was relaunched at Saab’s shipyard in Karlskrona after undergoing a comprehensive mid-life modification. HMS Halland is the third and final submarine in the Gotland class to undergo this upgrade, which includes new technologies and systems of the same type that will be used in the upcoming Blekinge-class submarines.

The relaunch marks a significant step in the development of Swedish submarine capabilities. The modification means that HMS Halland, together with its sister submarines HMS Gotland and HMS Uppland, which have previously undergone similar mid-life modifications, will be able to carry out naval missions for many years to come with new capabilities.

Securing critical underwater infrastructure and shipping lanes is more important than ever today. The relaunch of HMS Halland is proof of Saab’s ability to upgrade and deliver advanced submarines with the capabilities that the Swedish Navy is looking for. With HMS Halland, the Swedish Navy, and by extension NATO, is given additional muscle to defend and monitor the Baltic Sea, says Mats Wicksell, head of Saab’s Kockums business area.

Submarines play an important strategic role in defense and can be used throughout the conflict spectrum, from peace to war. HMS Halland’s ability to operate covertly with great endurance makes it a valuable asset in the Baltic Sea, where the stratified water makes it extra difficult to detect submarines.

During the modification, more than twenty of the central systems in HMS Halland have been replaced, such as sensors and management systems. These systems are the same as those that will be used in the Blekinge-class submarines (A26).
