AI Integration in French Public Services: A Call for Clear Policy

From France Travail (the French public employment service) to the Family Allowance Fund (CAF), including national education and local authorities, artificial intelligence (AI) is already deeply integrated into various sectors of public action. From combating fraud to guiding users, recruitment, and conversational agents, its uses are multiplying. And these transformations are set to amplify even further in the future.

It is for this reason that the think tank “Le Sens du service public” (The Meaning of Public Service) is publishing a report on Thursday, July 3rd, in partnership with the Jean Jaurès Foundation, entitled “Public Service Tested by Artificial Intelligence.” As the public service is already facing the development and experimentation of AI, the document calls for the creation of a clear political framework so that the subject is not only approached in a technical and technological manner.

“We can clearly see that AI is developing rapidly in all organizations,” explains Johan Theuret, co-founder of “Le Sens du service public” and coordinator of the report. “The objective was to try to see if it is possible to define a mode of AI development that respects the fundamental principles of public services.” Sovereignty, ecological sustainability, respect for democracy… These are all issues that demand a real public policy and a long-term strategic vision.
