ABB integrates motor and frequency converter in a slim plug-and-play platform.
ABB Launches LV Titanium Variable Speed Motor for Enhanced Energy Efficiency
ABB’s new LV Titanium Variable Speed Motor series offers the benefits of a highly efficient motor with variable speed drive (VSD) technology in a unified, compact, and adaptable plug-and-play solution. This allows industrial users to minimize energy consumption, reduce costs, and lower carbon emissions.
- The new LV Titanium Variable Speed Motor is a sleek, slim, and compact motor solution, easy to install with minimal cabling and reduced configuration and material costs.
- LV Titanium meets energy class IE5 Ultra Premium, minimizing energy consumption and carbon emissions, resulting in lower operating costs.
- The compact size makes LV Titanium an easy-to-use upgrade option for older, inefficient, direct-drive induction motors, providing a short return on investment.
- The motor with integrated frequency converter is a customizable solution suitable for efficient speed control of pumps, fans, compressors, and general industrial use. It is available in a range of sizes, power range 1.5 to 30 kW, and nominal speeds from 1,500 to 4,500 rpm.
LV Titanium is a simple and cost-effective way to optimize energy efficiency in pumps, compressors, and many other types of drives. Replacing existing direct-drive induction motors with LV Titanium is quick and easy, providing a short return on invested capital.
The innovative LV Titanium platform is much more than just a frequency converter mounted directly on a motor. It is a fully integrated concept with an advanced drive unit designed to deliver optimal performance together with a highly efficient permanent magnet motor. The sleek and slim design saves space, making LV Titanium ideal for driving vertical pumps, for example. The motor is also remarkably quiet.
Another advantage of LV Titanium is that it can be operated at different speeds and provides high torque even at low speeds.
“We developed LV Titanium in collaboration with customers who asked us to help them make energy savings and reduce carbon emissions without a lot of complicated installations,” says Stefan Floeck, head of IEC Low Voltage Motors at ABB. “This motor with integrated frequency converter provides exactly that – advanced performance in a compact, user-friendly, and speed-controlled motor package where we have used knowledge based on several decades.”
Plug-and-play functionality means that LV Titanium does not require any special commissioning because the fully integrated motor with speed controller has been commissioned and optimized to work together already at the factory. This makes installation quick and easy without the need for any cabinets or electrical rooms.
LV Titanium has an intuitive control panel with user-friendly analog and digital inputs and outputs, along with a simple built-in programmable logic controller (PLC). Connectivity features include Modbus RTU communication protocol for easy integration with PLC systems and other controllers.
Thanks to its compact design and high power density, LV Titanium is at least two frame sizes smaller than a corresponding induction motor, making it well-suited for installations where space requirements are critical, such as when replacing older, inefficient motors.
The potential for energy savings by switching to LV Titanium is clear when compared to a conventional, stand-alone fixed-speed motor in an application with a 7.5 kW centrifugal pump – one of the many benefits of the IE5 Variable Speed Motor. The annual savings on the electricity bill are estimated at over 4,000 euros based on a normal energy cost for Europe of 0.21 euros/kWh. At the same time, an annual saving of 6,000 kg in carbon dioxide emissions can be achieved based on the average European carbon intensity factor of 0.3 kg carbon dioxide/kWh.
LV Titanium Variable Speed Motor is currently available in smaller sizes from 1.5 kW. The motor series will be expanded for use up to 30 kW for a wide range of industries – from water purification and chemical treatment to food. In addition to the ready-made motors, it is also possible to customize the motors according to specific customer requirements.
Thanks to groundbreaking efficiency, versatility, robustness, and compact design, LV Titanium is designed to transform industrial operations worldwide by offering a forward-looking solution that not only meets current needs but also those of tomorrow.
