MagNOS to Replace Traditional Zero Clients
Updated: June 4, 2025, 14:37 Published: May 22, 2025, 10:49
Zero-client computing has long been a secure solution, but recent changes in hardware manufacturing are placing new demands on the technology. As major players make cutbacks, a need arises for more flexible and secure alternatives. MagNOS offers both security and easy management.
When leading companies change their product offerings – for example, by discontinuing Teradici chips and removing support for PCoIP in upcoming versions of virtualization software – businesses face new security challenges. Dependence on proprietary technologies that can disappear or change means that systems risk becoming unprotected and difficult to update.
Magnus Juntti at Enguild, which develops MagNOS, points out that Zero-clients have long been a reliable solution, but when the companies behind the technology change, he notes that it becomes difficult to switch or update systems without compromising security.
We see a clear risk when companies rely on vendor-locked systems; it opens up potential security problems if something were to happen to the manufacturers, for example, in a war or crisis situation, he says.
A Secure and Flexible Platform
This is where MagNOS comes in as an innovative solution. By building on Linux and supporting several different VDI clients, Mattias Jörlén, senior advisor at To Make IT, explains that it is a platform for the future of work environments.
MagNOS is a centrally managed, minimalist system that is more flexible than traditional Zero-clients, which enables a more secure solution than before.
Richard Pughe from Amulet Hotkey, which develops the hardware based on MagNOS, sees a future where security and flexibility go hand in hand. He emphasizes that the system can be crucial in today’s rapidly changing IT landscape.
MagNOS minimalism is a major advantage. The platform requires only a UEFI firmware and a secure network boot, and all clients are managed from a central server, which makes it easier to keep the system updated and protected, he says.
Eliminates Unnecessary Attack Surfaces
Astrid Åsberg, business coordinator at To Make IT, explains that the combination of MagNOS and Amulet ensures a flexible and scalable solution for companies that want to future-proof their IT systems.
Configurations and keys are retrieved from a server at startup, which means that no local settings are ever needed after deployment. MagNOS has been created with the goal of eliminating all unnecessary attack surfaces. It’s not just about technology – it’s about trust, and for us, security is not an option, it’s the foundation, she concludes.
