Volvo Cars and Google expand their collaboration with Gemini integration and accelerated vehicle innovation.

Volvo Cars Deepens Partnership with Google for Enhanced Automotive Experiences

Volvo Cars has announced an expanded partnership with Google to accelerate the delivery of the latest Android Automotive OS innovations to Volvo customers with Google built-in. This includes integrating Google Gemini, which the companies showcased together at Google I/O 2025 in a Volvo EX90. Furthermore, Volvo cars will now serve as one of Google’s hardware reference platforms for future Android development in vehicles.

“For years, Google and Volvo Cars have worked closely together to bring the latest technology to connected cars,” said Patrick Brady, Vice President of Android for Cars at Google. “We are excited to deepen this partnership and increase the pace of innovation that will not only improve the driving experience for Volvo customers but also set new standards for the automotive industry.”

With Google’s upcoming launch of Google Gemini in the car, drivers of Volvo cars with Google built-in will be among the first to benefit from the power of the latest conversational AI technology.

Gemini in the car is designed to better understand your needs while driving through natural conversations. You can use natural language to compose messages, translate them into another language before sending, ask questions from the car’s owner’s manual, or learn specific details about your destination. This type of natural interaction can help reduce cognitive load, allowing you to focus on driving and minimizing distractions for everyone in the vehicle.

Gemini will replace the current Google Assistant in Volvo cars with Google built-in later this year.

Volvo Drivers Among the First to Experience New Android Features

Through the expanded partnership, Volvo cars will also become one of the hardware reference platforms in Google’s development of the Android operating system for cars. This means Google will use Volvo Cars as a key development partner for new features and updates before they are added to Android’s main codebase. This collaboration will enable Google and Volvo Cars to jointly develop new connected experiences, ensuring that Volvo drivers are among the first to enjoy the latest Android features and performance improvements. It is also expected to accelerate progress in the field of connected cars for the entire automotive industry and drivers worldwide.

“We strive to deliver technology that puts people at the center, and a fantastic customer experience is a key part of that. Through this partnership with Google, we can be first to bring the very latest features and capabilities from the leading consumer ecosystem into our products,” said Alwin Bakkenes, Head of Global Software Engineering at Volvo Cars. “With our growing partnership, we are collaborating to find groundbreaking solutions that shape the future of connected cars.”
