Cash register ringing for the municipality’s school students as Jokkmokk AI-optimizes its energy use.
Jokkmokk Municipality Achieves Significant Energy Savings and Invests in AI for Further Efficiency
Over the past twelve years, Jokkmokk Municipality has successfully reduced energy consumption in its properties by an average of over 25 percent per year. This has led to substantial cost savings and revenues for the student councils at the schools involved in the project. The municipality is now taking the next step by investing in AI-optimized HVAC systems to further reduce energy consumption.
Last year, Jokkmokk Municipality celebrated twelve years of successful energy efficiency improvements in its various properties. The project encompassed a total of 65,000 m² of premises in several buildings, with Östra School’s 8,000 m² being the first. From 2013 to 2024, the municipality managed to achieve a total of 25 percent in heating savings per year while simultaneously reducing total electricity consumption by over 21 percent in the 15 properties included. This work has resulted in over 40 million in saved costs.
Together with Schneider Electric, the municipality is continuing its work on energy efficiency and integrating AI to optimize the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems of buildings. According to a new study from Schneider Electric, this can have a significant impact on energy consumption. For the 87 school properties included in the study, connected solutions combined with AI managed to reduce electricity consumption by approximately nine percent and the use of district heating by over three percent.
Jokkmokk Municipality is a prime example of how energy efficiency and building automation can lead to both reduced energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions in the short and long term. Furthermore, the municipality demonstrates the cost savings that can be achieved. We are proud to have been part of this journey, and as we now implement AI-based optimization within HVAC systems, we hope to see equally impressive results.

Reducing energy consumption in Jokkmokk’s properties has not only been a focus for the municipality. The work on energy efficiency has also been a way to educate schoolchildren about energy habits and encourage engagement in sustainability issues. At Östra School in Jokkmokk, students have actively participated in saving energy, and as part of the agreement, the student council has received ten percent of the annual value of the electricity savings to use for activities they have decided on themselves. They now hope that others will follow this recipe for success.
Our work with energy efficiency has had tangible effects, and the cost savings we have made have meant that we have had resources left over for other initiatives. Equally important has been to engage our young people in energy issues and sustainability and give them the tools to influence their school environment. By now integrating AI to further improve energy consumption, we can make even greater savings that can be used for more enjoyable purposes. We hope that our success will inspire more municipalities to invest in energy efficiency and smart technology, and at the same time engage young people in the process.
