Tech Concepts That Could Determine the Future for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises
Navigating the Tech Landscape: Challenges and Opportunities for SMEs in Gothenburg
The Gothenburg tech scene is booming and developing rapidly. However, despite a strong academic connection and innovative startups, many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) struggle to keep up with technological advancements. Digital transformation, automation, and new business models demand change – but how can companies navigate this complex tech jungle?
“We are seeing a huge race.”
Jon Wingborg, Project Manager at Chalmers Industriteknik, has worked on identifying and commercializing research-driven technology for over 15 years. He describes how SMEs often find themselves in a difficult position when faced with new technology.
“Many companies see the potential, but don’t know how to take the step. Quantum technology, AI, and deep tech are buzzwords for many, but in order not to fall behind, they need to find ways to apply the technology in their businesses,” says Wingborg.
Quantum technology is one of the areas where Sweden, and Gothenburg in particular, has a strong position. Despite this, it is difficult for smaller companies to access the knowledge and resources required to integrate this type of technology into their operations.
The Business Model That Changes the Game
Another challenge for SMEs is how business models are changing in line with technological developments. Madelene Näslund, project manager for tech and business development at Business Region Gothenburg, believes that Software as a Service (SaaS) has become a dominant model, creating both opportunities and challenges.
“Previously, you sold a product once and were done. Now, customers expect a subscription-based service where they pay on an ongoing basis. It is a huge transformation for traditional companies, but also a great potential for those who dare to invest,” says Näslund.
SaaS companies often offer software via subscription, and many of today’s most successful tech companies use this model. In Gothenburg, the number of SaaS companies is growing steadily, but the challenge for SMEs is to adapt to a world where customer relationships and revenue streams look different than before.
How Small Businesses Can Navigate the Tech Landscape
For many small and medium-sized enterprises, it is about taking small, strategic steps towards digitization and technology integration. Companies can start by:
- Mapping the needs – What challenges can new technology help solve?
- Exploring collaborations – Through collaboration with startups, universities and incubators, SMEs can gain access to expertise and innovation.
- Testing on a small scale – Small pilot projects make it easier to evaluate new technology without taking too much risk.
The Future – and the Risks of Not Acting
Gothenburg has a unique ecosystem of research, startups and established companies that creates a favorable environment for innovation. But in order for the region’s small and medium-sized enterprises to keep up with developments, active change work is needed.
“Those who do not adapt risk being overtaken. It’s not about everyone having to become tech companies, but about understanding how technology affects one’s business and how one can benefit from it,” concludes Näslund.
The future for tech in Gothenburg is bright, but those who do not understand and adapt to the new rules of the game may find it difficult to keep up.
