1918: The Mystery of the USS Cyclops

The collier USS Cyclops, carrying 309 people, disappeared without a trace between the West Indies and Baltimore. No distress message, no wreckage, no convincing explanation. One of the greatest maritime disasters outside of war in U.S. history.

1925: The SS Cotopaxi, Disappeared and Found

Loaded with coal, this cargo ship departed from Charleston bound for Cuba before vanishing. Its disappearance remained unexplained for a long time and was referenced in popular culture, notably by Steven Spielberg in *Close Encounters of the Third Kind*. The wreck was reportedly identified in 2020 off the coast of Florida, with evidence suggesting a severe storm.

1945: Flight 19, The Media Trigger

The disappearance of Flight 19 truly launched the legend. In December 1945, five U.S. Navy torpedo bombers departed on a training mission. Loss of bearings, fuel exhaustion, pilot confusion… none returned. A rescue plane sent to search for them also disappeared. The toll: 27 people missing. This event, documented but shrouded in ambiguity, opened the door to all kinds of speculation.

Additional Cases: Abandoned Yachts and Vanished Aircraft

Other disappearances reinforce the Triangle’s unsettling aura:

In 1955, the Connemara IV was found empty, adrift, in good condition but with no one on board.

Extreme Weather and Rough Seas

The Triangle area is crossed by the Gulf Stream, a warm and powerful current, which can generate sudden storms. Hurricanes, strong winds, and chaotic seas complicate navigation, even for experienced pilots.

Human Error

According to some scientists, many disappearances are the result of decisions made in panic, a lack of training, or poorly managed breakdowns in stressful conditions. A conclusion that can be summarized as: “The mystery of the Bermuda Triangle is not a mystery, just a series of poorly understood accidents.”

Release of Submarine Methane

Oceanographic studies suggest that pockets of methane, trapped in sediments at the bottom of the ocean, can be released suddenly. This degassing would create a void under ships, causing them to sink rapidly without a trace. A realistic hypothesis, studied especially in the context of global warming.

The Triangle Today: Declining Myth or Still Relevant?

In recent years, few notable disappearances have been reported in the area. Increased aerial surveillance, technological advances in navigation, and improved weather warning systems have undoubtedly helped to limit incidents.

But the Bermuda Triangle remains a popular subject in the media, series, and video games. The mix of real events, gray areas, and collective imagination continues to fuel a fascinating narrative ambiguity.

The Bermuda Triangle embodies a modern enigma halfway between rational analysis and the allure of mystery. While scientific elements tend to demystify past events, the region’s aura remains intact. A symbol of our need to believe in the inexplicable, even in the face of the most down-to-earth explanations.
