New Orders in Finland and the UK – W5 Steps Up its Internationalization

Finland, the United Kingdom – and another FMV order at home.

With three new deals in hand, Swedish W5 Solutions is ramping up in a defense market where growth, trust, and speed have become hard currency.

Defense technology company W5 Solutions, which delivers everything from shooting training and simulation to power units and mobile modules, so-called shelters, is now increasing its international presence.

“We have a strong foothold in Sweden and would like to build more ‘home markets’ for this type of product. Finland is strategically relevant, and we hope for a long-term trust there,” says CEO Evelina Hedskog.

The deal in Finland concerns target material for military shooting training – the same type of system that has made the company the main supplier in Sweden. In the UK, it is about simulation, within the Power business area.

“We believe a lot in the Nordic countries. There is a clear desire to buy similar materials, not least because the countries will carry out more joint operations in the future. And that benefits us, who are locally present, of course,” says Evelina Hedskog.

She points out that security of supply has become an even more important parameter in procurement – especially after the signals from the security conference in Munich.

“American suppliers are not as obvious anymore. Countries are looking closer to home, and we notice that in the procurements.”

Acts Quickly When Required

At home, W5 Solutions has simultaneously strengthened its position further. A new order from FMV includes both shooting range material and systems for tactical training – and shows, according to Evelina Hedskog, the company’s ability to act quickly when required.

“It was very much about us being able to deliver this year already. But it is also based on long-term relationships where the customer knows that we can scale up quickly and maintain quality.”

Another factor that weighs heavily in procurements is the possibility of gathering several parts of the delivery from one and the same actor.

“We have a broad offering in training, so the customer can buy everything from us. It simplifies the procurement. And we are in the middle of the field in terms of price, which makes us competitive.”

At the same time, it is far from just the training area that is growing. During the last six months, important orders have come within all three business areas – even shelters and power supply.

“There is quite even pressure right now. You are building up basic capability again, both in Sweden and other countries. There is too little of everything. Then it is important to have products that are 90 percent ready, and then can be adapted the last bit. That’s where we are now.”

”Large Enough to Handle What is Required”

According to Evelina Hedskog, cross-selling between the business areas is also starting to gain momentum in earnest, and the company’s combined volume and structure make it easier to meet larger and more complex procurements.

“We are not huge, but large enough to handle what is required. It is often about being able to tie up capital before delivery, and that is tough for many. We have an advantage there.”

But with more deals also come more competitors, not least from other industries with new technology and new approaches.

“Many new players are coming in, especially from the tech side. And even if we who are already in have a head start, we cannot lean back. We must dare to think new and run a little faster. This is not just about business; it is basically about being better than the opponent in technology development.”

Growth going forward will take place both organically and through acquisitions. After a break during 2023, the systematic acquisition work is back in progress.

“We have said that we want to make two to three acquisitions by 2027, and we have picked up the pace in that work. At the same time, we have a lot in the order book already. Now it is important to speed up the machinery – and make a good deal of what we already have,” concludes Evelina Hedskog.
